As members of the United Methodist Church, we have been represented by the motto: open hearts, open minds, and open doors.  Tragically, there are situations and circumstances that make it difficult for us to live out this motto because we are afraid to open our eyes.  We are afraid to see the social and economic injustice, afraid to see the devastation caused by poverty, afraid to see situations that burden people and break the heart of God.  We are confronted, yet again, with the fierce urgency of now.

Friends, we must prepare for the 2019 Special Session of General Conference.  We, clergy and laity alike, must find the courage to open our eyes so that we might be prepared to provide comfort, encouragement and support to our brothers and sisters in Christ.  During the 2019 Special Session, the Council of Bishops will examine paragraphs in the Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and exploring options to strengthen the unity of the church.  This can be an uncomfortable issue to talk about – we know.  Still, we have the charge from our Bishop to “be informed, be engaged, and be pro-active.”

Please join with Bishop LaTrelle Easterling and other members of the Baltimore Region, on Sunday, December 9, (3:00 to 5:00 pm) at Fallston United Methodist Church as we look at the proposed plans for the Way Forward.  Please join in the discussion of the impact on the local church and the global church.  This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.”  Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
